An altar is a flat table-like surface on which ritual sacrifices are made.
Don’t be alarmed—the word sacrifice simply refers to an offering. We give up something—incense, a food item, or simply our time, energy and attention—in order to acknowledge and express gratitude to the unseen beings central to our spiritual practise.
In a less literal sense, an altar is an anchor point for the ritual practitioner. Over time, we build relationship to a particular space and perform repetitive ritual actions in that space. This allows our practise to be somatically grounded, habitual, and more real by way of sensory and aesthetic means.
